First let me say this shaver is pretty amazing. I have tried many electric shavers in the past and like most, have given up on them as they are either too rough on my face or they just don’t shave close enough or a combo of the two. This is a rugged, well made shaver. The quality of this shaver versus lesser cost units and brands is evident in every facet of it’s construction and operation. It works like a finely engineered machine. If you take shaving seriously, this is the shaver for you.
My only concern with this product is with the cost, it’s not cheap. I know reviews aren’t really supposed to be based on cost as prices change but you should do some math before considering this pricey shaver.
Lets say you use a high end razor with replaceable cartridges, pick one of the top of the line with 4-5 blades that really shaves super close.
The razor: – and comes with 1 razor cartridge
Replaceable cartridges: they seem to cost from – each, depending on where you buy them.
So, that means for the razor and – a year on cartridges assuming you use a new one each month. Less if you make the cartridges last longer than a month or find a good deal on them.
So, not only does this shaver cost a lot, it costs more than buying cartridges each year to use – they suggest you buy a shaver head each year to replace the one built in. I dunno if that math works out frankly. I hope Phillips doesn’t send a hit squad out on me. Anyways….
Pros of the Philips Norelco 1250x/40 SensoTouch 3d Electric Shaver:
Very close, smooth shave. The triple floating heads actually let you get anywhere you need to shave.
Easy clean up, pop the shaver heads & rinse under water. I know, crazy!
Charges fast, lasts a long time. Cool digital readouts for charging status & battery.
Can use it in the shower (or so it says, I am not brave enough to try!).
Can use dry or with shaving cream / gel.
Comes with a nice charging stand and a zip up travel case and a small brush.
Very handy for travel, no need to pack a razor and gel / cream.
Has a built in trimmer, very nice and easy to use.
Cons:
It’s a sealed unit & rechargeable batteries have a life span. One day the battery will die and you will either send it in for a new one or toss it and buy a new shaver. Most batteries like this last 2-3 years tops before they stop holding a charge. That’s my experience.
The manual says to replace the shaving heads once a year which, I believe, cost about . So that means you are spending a year to use this shaver at the optimum performance. I dunno about that math frankly. That’s more than just buying a year’s worth of top of the line razor cartridges each year.
Comes with the standard “please give this shaver 21 days of usage to let your face get used to it…” I am in the first week of that 21 days. Some irritation on my neck from the shaver. Hope it gets better.
To get a really close shave, which I like, this shaver doesn’t actually save me any time. Lathering up my face & using a razor doesn’t really take any more or less time plus I still get a closer shave with a top of the line razor cartridge.

Since I’m a woman, I got this electric shaver for my son since he goes through razors left and right.
He ended up passing on it in that he said his beard is too thick and electric shavers hate him.
So I gave it to a co-worker who at first didn’t want it either for the same reasons but I talked him into trying it out.
After two days of using it, he’s sold. His assessment: “It didn’t tug or irritate my skin like other electric shavers. It isn’t quite as close a shave as a razor but it is close enough for me. Its a little noisy but maybe that’s just me. But its good. I like it. I’d buy it if you hadn’t given it to me. Rating? On a 5-star scale? 4-stars.”

I have always used shaving cream with a Gillette safety razor. I loved the long ago day when the Wilkinson Sword blades came out. They were super sharp and gave a superb shave, didn’t pull or hurt your face and didn’t slice your skin like the old double edge blades. The one time I tried an electric razor, it left my skin irritated and the shave was nowhere close to being comparable to a wet shave.
The Norelco 1250x/40 SensoTouch is unbelieveable. I have a tough beard and it gave me a shave as close as any I have ever had. I love it!

I love the process of shaving with a real razor because it’s relaxing and there’s a technique involved, but I hate doing it frequently because it takes time and it’s somewhat messy. I actually shave very little, since my work doesn’t require it. Now that I have the SensoTouch 3D, my coworkers are going to be shocked at how often I come in clean shaven.
Simply put, this is the best electric shaver I’ve ever owned! It’s quiet, fast, and cuts extremely close.
I can’t describe how impressive it is to have an electric razor that doesn’t sound like a weed whacker. This guy sounds like a cell phone vibrating, very little noise at all. It’s like getting a shave and a mini facial massage at the time.
I think it took less than 5 minutes for me to dry shave the first time, after charging the unit overnight. It was quick and painless. The hair on my neck grows in a strange pattern and typically large amounts of hair get missed, if I use anything other than an actual razor. The SensoTouch 3D got most of the hair all the other electric shaver usually miss. I did have to go over the area a few times and that did cause a little irritation after the fact, but I think that’s typical for using any new shaver for the first time.
Clean up is a awesome. The hair gets collected into the unit while you use it, so very little if any hair lands in the sink (big points on the “Wife Score” chart). Then when you need too, you simply pop open the shaving heads and rinse this bad boy under the water. It couldn’t be easier or more efficient. Plus, the ability to both dry and wet shave is great feature.
I can’t recommend this enough!!

Meijer and Walmart no longer sell this item. This is the only way to clean your Remington shaver if you have those models, so you have to go on line to purchase the product. Unfortunately when I last cleaned my shaver the solution leaked all over the counter. I’m not sure why and will look to see if it does this again. Otherwise, it’s money literally down the drain.

The razor requires cleaning with the manufacturer’s product, but the cleaner’s ingredient label reveals that it is 98% alcohol with a touch of jojoba oil and fragrance. Pretty pricey for something that’s almost entirely alcohol. I think I’ll try my own mix next time.

I’ll admit, I have a little ear hair which is why I bought this and I used to have a norelco brand that had a rechargeable battery inside, it worked great until the battery refused to hold a charge. I looked for a good replacement and came across this Panasonic unit and it really does a decent job. I do find I have a slightly harder time using it around the ear but it does cut the little hairs without any pulling or pain. I’m very happy that this uses a AA battery and is easily replaceable. I am curious how long I’ll actually beable to use it before I have to replace the battery. So far I’ve used it for about 2 weeks and it’s still running as strong as it was when I first put the battery in so all looks good.

After 9 months of use, the trimmer began pulling hair rather than cutting. Keeping a fresh battery in the trimmer helped, but the blades have definitely dulled. Panasonic offers a replacement “blade block” assembly (WER416K1058) for .35 (plus .95 for shipping). Not really a great value given the price of a new unit and that I can get it shipped free with my Amazon Prime membership.
Pros:
- good sized
- easy to use
- trims nose well when new
- ok choice among limited alternatives
Cons:
- weak job of trimming ear hair – leaves visible stubble
- limited life span
- might best be considered a “disposable” device
Summary: Not sure I would by again. My scissors still work fine.
